Letter from the VP

As a Jesuit, Catholic university, Loyola University Maryland is rooted in the 500-year history of the Society of Jesus, founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. In the same spirit of St. Ignatius and the early Jesuits, we aspire to welcome students and employees of all religious identities, practices and traditions, and to share the rich educational and spiritual traditions of our heritage with all members of our community.
As an institution named after the founder of the Jesuits, we invite all members of our community to encounter, explore, engage, and enact our Ignatian mission, engaging with our heritage and our values, so as to be transformed personally and professionally.
Jesuit education aims to form and transform the whole person, centering academic excellence, interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge, so as to graduate servant leaders. To do so, we lean into a process of education centering:
- Cura Personalis: care for the whole person – intellectual development, emotional development and spiritual development
- Cura Apostolica: care for the institution, and all members of our community, as we advance our strategic plan, Together We Rise
- Cura Urbi: care for the city and community, as we advance an ecological approach to justice and placed-based education
At Loyola University Maryland, we strive to create a culture of encounter and a culture of belonging. My hope is that you will find a community deeply rooted in our Ignatian tradition, and in constant dialogue with all academic disciplines, cultures and society writ large.
Whether it is the Mass of the Holy Spirit, or a day of service alongside the York Road corridor, or any of our ministry programs, I look forward to seeing you on campus.
Peace,
Milton Javier Bravo, Ph.D.
Vice President for Mission and Identity
