Business, Law, and Society: Law and Justice (LW 109)

Provides a foundation for students who wish to explore the role that law plays in social, political, economic, and cultural life as it pertains to business behavior. The coursework provides a foundation of knowledge regarding the basic concepts necessary to understanding how business operates, the rules of law, and the influences and effects of law on the social and economic system. The course goal is to provide students with an understanding of the nature and functions of law in society and how law influences business behavior.

Faculty biography

Fr. Tim Brown, S.J. was born and raised in Michigan. He continued his higher education at Georgetown, Fordham, and George Mason University. Currently, Fr. Brown is an Associate Professor of Law in the Sellinger School of Business and Special Assistant to the President for the Office of Mission Integration. Fr. Brown helped pioneer service learning at Loyola University and has a great concern for improving justice in the world. He has a passion for teaching and inspiring students to make a contribution in the world.

Resistance, Rebellion, and Reason: Foundations of Philosophy & a Study of the Ancients  (PL 201)

This semester-long course is designed to bring the ideas and writings from the Ancient Greek philosophers to students through conversation and in-depth discussions. The class will explore and come to understand Sophocles, Socrates, and Plato's ideas of Justice, as well as Aristotle's theories of virtue and political excellence.

Faculty biography

Professor Nina Guise-Gerrity is in her tenth year as Loyola faculty. She teaches in the Philosophy department as well as mentors interns from cross-disciplines. Her areas of study include ancient Greek Philosophy and Political & Economic Philosophy.

Mentor biography

Becca Winkler serves as an associate director in the office of student engagement. In this role, she serves as the advisor for the Student Government Association. Becca also works closely with student clubs and organizations. Becca has served as a Messina mentor since 2016 and enjoys supporting first-year students during their transition to college life. She holds a Masters of Education degree in school counseling and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Sociology; both from Loyola University Maryland. A Baltimore native, Becca enjoys exploring new restaurants, traveling, and spending time with family and friends in her spare time.

Tyler Zorn -- "I am the Assistant Director of Sport Programs at the Fitness & Aquatic Center (FAC), so I oversee intramurals, club sports, and esports. I enjoy working with my student employees and building relationships with them!"

LW 109 counts toward the diversity requirement for all students. This course pairing includes a service learning option, and may be particularly interesting to students who are interested in Forensics and/or pre-law. PL 201 satisfies the Philosophy core requirement for all students.
