Loyola University Maryland partners with Maryland Legal Aid to host expungement clinic

Loyola University Maryland is partnering with Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) to host an expungement clinic on Sunday, March 30, 2025. The clinic will be held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Loyola Clinical Centers at 5911 York Road, Suite 100, in Baltimore.

Individuals with a criminal history will have an opportunity to be advised by legal professionals and have petitions prepared on site. This one-on-one expungement assistance can be life-changing for the vast number of people who qualify.

“Loyola’s partnership with Maryland Legal Aid has benefitted both Loyola students as well as our surrounding community,” said Matt Beverlin, Ph.D., J.D., assistant teaching professor of political science and pre-law advisor. “Pre-Law students get to work with a practicing attorney in living out the Jesuit mission of service to others. The critical part, though, is that we are able to work together to remove old and harmful criminal records from people’s records. This help to a fresh start is impactful, and instructive on the potential of a career in the law.”

The event will mark the seventh expungement clinic Loyola and MLA have hosted together. More than 230 total petitions have been prepared over the past six events.

“Last year, we worked with Loyola’s school of arts and sciences to offer this space for the expungement clinic, which was previously running in the parking lot,” said Kara Vincent, ’91, M.S. ’93, executive director of Loyola Clinical Centers. "After touring the facility and seeing the options, the organizers jumped at the opportunity to host this event in Belvedere Square, continuing the experiential learning for Loyola students within our community. By providing this indoor space, we were able to expand the clinic to several times a year. We are once again thrilled to welcome the expungement clinic back to Belvedere!”

Clinic volunteers will help participants on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointments are needed.

“The Pre-Law Society is proud to partner with Maryland Legal Aid to provide free legal assistance to help Baltimore community members clear eligible misdemeanors from their records,” said Elizabeth Kosik, ’25, president of the Pre-Law Society. “Rooted in Jesuit values of service and community, this initiative offers compassion and support through acts of service that create lasting positive change.”

Attendees should use the entrance on the corner of York Road and East Belvedere Avenue. Free parking is available in the Belvedere Square parking lot.
