The opportunity to study abroad at Loyola was one of the best decisions of my life. It pushed me to become independent and embrace a new culture. While I was in Newcastle, I engaged with the international club at the university, visited castles, went to the weekly outdoor market, tried new foods, and made new friends. Being placed with roommates who weren't part of the Loyola program helped ease me into the culture and learn words that they said differently there and the best way for transportation around the country and the rest of Europe. I will cherish my memories there and leverage what I learned towards other aspects of my life.

I knew I wanted to study abroad since coming to Loyola and studying abroad in Cork was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Through my study abroad experience, I gained confidence, new perspectives, and an increased appreciation for other cultures. Ireland has the most beautiful scenery and the most welcoming people.  I made the best friendships and amazing memories traveling around Ireland and other countries in Europe. I learned so much about Irish history and traditions and am so grateful for this experience. I will cherish these memories forever and I already can’t wait to go back to Ireland!

Studying abroad in Rome, Italy was one of the most enriching experiences I have ever had. Not only did I get to experience and immerse myself fully in Rome’s ancient history and culture, but I also had the opportunity to visit and explore many cities in Europe that have helped me grow as a person and ignatian citizen. Through Loyola’s program, I have met new people that have become lifelong friends, and gained a new perspective that I can bring back and share with the Loyola Community. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and experience as it allowed me to gain knowledge, go out of my comfort zone, and introduce me to a lifelong passion for traveling!

English Major, Minors: Classical Civilizations and Political Science

Living, learning, and exploring Rome, Italy was hands down the best experience of my life. The Italian language, culture, and availability of art and history made every day spent abroad like living in a movie. Hands down, Rome is my favorite city I have ever visited. The central location and ease I had adjusting to Italy’s modes of transportation made my weekend trips to over 13 other countries and many major cities/regions in Italy possible. The experience brought me closer to my friends and family, gave me a strong sense of independence, and made me a better and more world-conscious person than I was just before leaving. From days spent skipping through the Acropolis of Athens, Greece to ones dancing with the locals in Dublin, Ireland and everywhere in between, I will never forget the experiences I had studying abroad and hope to be back soon!

Major: Psychology

Studying abroad in Copenhagen was the best decision I could have made for my college years. I lived with other Danish students which allowed me to completely immerse myself in Danish culture. Through my university I had the opportunity to travel with my classmates to Aarhus, Denmark, Vienna, Austria, and Milan, Italy. All expenses were fully covered by my school and I learned so much about not only Scandinavian culture but different cultures around Europe as well. Over the course of my semester I was able to become more confident in who I am and how I view the world around me. I have made life long friends and memories I will never forget. This once in a lifetime opportunity has shaped who I am today and I encourage everyone to apply

Before coming to Loyola, studying abroad was something I never seriously considered. However, choosing to study in Newcastle has turned out to be the best decision of my college experience. Not only did it allow me to grow academically, but it also transformed me on a personal level. The life skills and habits I developed will stay with me long after my time abroad. Whether I was exploring the vibrant city of Newcastle or traveling across Europe, I could feel myself evolving in ways I hadn’t expected. As someone who was initially hesitant, I now passionately encourage others to embrace this life-changing opportunity!

Mia Scollo, Leuven, Belgium, Full Year 2023-2024

Major: Political Science, Minor: History

Spending my junior year in Belgium was the best decision I have ever made. Leuven is a beautiful city with so much history and culture, and the surrounding region is full of things to do and places to see. It’s super easy to travel throughout Europe when you’re living in Belgium, so I was fortunate enough to visit 21 countries during my year. Studying abroad pushed me to become independent and do things that challenged me, but the people I met and the experiences I had made it all worthwhile. Studying and living in Leuven is made easier by the amazing support system that Loyola provides, as well as the fellow students in the international residence. I am grateful to have made lifelong friendships with many of the people who lived in the house. I encourage anyone considering studying abroad to take the leap and go for it, because you will have unforgettable experiences no matter where you go. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Having the opportunity to study abroad in Athens this past semester was one of the most unforgettable and impactful experiences I have ever had. Athens is a city full of enriching history everywhere you turn (plus amazing food) and this was one of the main reasons I choose this program as well. I knew coming into college that I wanted to study abroad but didn't know where. Looking back, I don't think I could've chosen a more perfect program for me, the experiences, and friendships I made are ones that are going to last a lifetime. From the minute I stepped foot in Athens, I knew it was going to be an adventure and I couldn't be more grateful. Loyola has so many resources and opportunities like this to take advantage of and I am so glad I did. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

I knew even before I came to Loyola that I wanted to study abroad, and the Leuven program turned out to be and best choice for me. I knew that I wanted to go to a city that felt smaller, and Leuven quickly became a place I could call home. I loved the atmosphere of the Loyola Nachbahr Huis, and it brought me closer not only to international students, but Loyola students as well. Being surrounded by students from all over the world taught me valuable lessons and gave me a more global outlook. Belgium has a great public transportation system and is in a very central location, which made it very easy to travel. I visited 14 different countries during the five months I spent abroad. I am so grateful for my experience abroad and I hope to share my passion and experiences with underclassmen who are interested in going abroad.

Studying abroad has been an eye-opening experience, and I believe regardless of the occupation you want to go into, being abroad will teach you things beyond the "necessities" for your future job. My biggest take away is experiencing things from a native's perspective is 100% different from the experience of a tourist, no matter where you go, which only becomes more evident once you're there.  And even though I was there for only a month, it had brought me such enriching lessons, some confidence to step outside the comfort zone, a knack for curiosity, and even some lifelong friends. As one of the only first years going into this experience during my first summer in college, I want to give advice to those out there who are excited to study abroad in college but are afraid to early on. Just go do it. These lessons of inclusion, culture, and community will carry on with me through the rest of my academic and professional career.  I will be forever grateful for Loyola's dedication to this program and hopefully I'll get a chance to go visit Prague again someday!
