Under Armour’s Joseph D. “Jody” Giles named 2013 Lattanze Executive of the Year
February 20, 2013
Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management will honor Joseph D. “Jody” Giles, chief information officer at Under Armour, as the 2013 Lattanze Executive of the Year on Thursday, April 11. The event, which takes place from 5:30 - 8 p.m. at Loyola’s Graduate Center–Timonium Campus, will feature Giles’ address, “Learning How to Armour Your Innovation,” as well as the award presentation and a cocktail reception.
Giles’ presentation will discuss the principles of leadership and innovation that Under Armour uses to fuel its dramatic growth and achieve its vision to “Make All Athletes Better.” He will offer examples of how a company founded on innovation continues to foster a culture of innovation, and specifically how information technology serves a critical role on the team. Giles will also discuss the advantages of Jesuit-based leadership principles in the business world.
Based in Baltimore, Under Armour is a fast growing and dynamic success story that has its sights on changing the world for performance apparel and footwear. Giles became the company’s first CIO in January 2005. Since then, the company has grown dramatically, experienced a very successful IPO, implemented SAP in eight months, and is in the process of revamping its supply chain and product development systems.
Prior to joining Under Armour, Giles' career was based in southern California, where he served as CIO for Vans, Inc., the footwear and apparel maker focusing on skateboarding and surfing. He also worked in the entertainment industry, serving as CIO for Virgin Interactive Entertainment and executive director of systems planning for Paramount Pictures. Giles began his IT career in the public utility industry, with Southern California Gas Company.
In 2004, Giles was named "CIO of the Year" by the Gartner Midsize Enterprise Summit. He has been featured in several articles in industry magazines, including cover stories in "Information Week" and "Apparel Magazine."
Giles graduated with honors from the University of New Mexico with a degree in business computer systems, and earned his MBA, with distinction, from Pepperdine University.
The award, established in 1991 and formerly known as the Lattanze CIO of the Year, is presented by Loyola’s David D. Lattanze Center for Information Value. It recognizes leaders who have distinguished themselves in the strategic application of information technology to achieve organizational objectives. The nominating committee consists of senior executives and professors of business in the Baltimore area. Previous recipients have included Phyllis Schneck, Ph.D., of McAfee, Inc.; David Norton of Caesars Entertainment Corp.; John D. Halamka, M.D., of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, LaVerne Council of Johnson & Johnson; David Barnes of United Parcel Services; and Charles Geshke of Adobe Systems.
In addition to the Lattanze Center and the Sellinger School, this event is sponsored by System Source, Mind Over Machines, SAS, and GlassHouse Technologies.
