Dean's Reflections

The end of any year finds us winding down a semester, preparing for the start of another, involved in both holiday commitments and spending time with family and friends. With all of these happenings, the New Year often arrives as a continuation of the previous one; before you know it, it is time to resume the work from December. This is why I’m glad that we begin 2013 in a way that that we ended last year—honoring Brian Rogers of T. Rowe Price as our 2012 Business Leader of the Year and looking forward to his Speaker Series remarks to the Baltimore business communities in January. Brian is truly one of the top investors in the world and an excellent speaker, and we are very much looking forward to the presentation of his topic,"Looking Ahead: A Perspective on the Economy and Financial Markets."

In this month’s feature, Brian notes that a business education with an emphasis on ethics is significant in developing leaders of integrity and social responsibility. This has been and remains a hallmark of the Sellinger education. At Loyola, we teach our students that to lead they need to be dedicated to their communities. Both businesses and communities become stronger when knowledge, resources, and services are shared and working in concert.

Our goal at the Sellinger School is to set examples for our students by introducing them to organizations and individuals who are the paradigms of ethical, effective, and successful leaders. T. Rowe Price is a model business in that it has focused not only on providing sound financial advice for its clients, but also by merging what Mr. Rogers calls the “ecosystem of education, success, and responsibility” into its corporate mission. It’s a process that has worked for more than 75 years and I’m glad to say one that also aligns with Sellinger’s approach to business education. Over the years, hundreds of Loyola students have held internships or built careers at T. Rowe Price. There are currently 250 Loyola alumni employed at T. Rowe Price, accounting for 5 percent of the company’s workforce. This is a testament to the success of our students in contributing to a company the caliber of T. Rowe Price.
