What can you learn from a Sellinger MBA?
Researching business schools can be a difficult process. There are many factors to compare between schools and programs. It can be easy to get caught up on details while researching various schools. Don’t forget to ask the most important question of all: “What will I learn from this MBA program?” We spoke with Patricia Tarrant, director of graduate evening business programs, about Sellinger’s MBA learning aims.
In-Demand Skills
Sellinger’s MBA courses give students a broad business education and equips students with the skills needed to lead in a changing world. “While the MBA is beneficial for business students who are hoping to advance their careers, we are also finding that a lot of students come without a business background,” says Tarrant. “For example, we’ve seen engineers come to our program with technical experience in engineering, but to move up the career ladder they need to be able to understand financial statements, assist with marketing plans, and more. That’s where the broad business acumen really adds to students’ skill sets and develops them as leaders.” Sellinger students take MBA courses in:
- Marketing
- Finance
- Accounting
- Economics
- Leadership
- Globalization
- Statistics
Sellinger students leave the program with the leadership skills they need. Our graduates find that their professional growth translates into momentum in their careers.
Specializations
Sellinger also offers students a variety of specializations to choose from. The newest additions are Data Analytics, and Investments and Applied Portfolio Management. “We feel that with our two newest specializations we’re really responding to today’s needs,” says Tarrant. “For example, with Data Analytics, there is a tremendous amount of data available to companies, but employers are telling us they need people who can really understand and dissect the data, make critical insights, and create opportunities from that data.” In addition to Data Analytics, other Sellinger specialization options include:
- Data Analytics
- Finance
- General Business
- Information Systems
- International Business
- Investments and Applied Portfolio Management
- Management
- Marketing
Hands-on Learning
A unique aspect to a Sellinger MBA education is the program’s experiential requirement. Of the four electives required of each student, one must be experiential. Options include:
- Study abroad programs (international and domestic)
- “The Sellinger Applied Portfolio Fund” class where students manage a portion of Loyola’s endowment fund
- “Management Consulting,” a class where students work on projects directly with local companies
“I think the experiential opportunities are invaluable,” says Tarrant. “Our MBA is taught in a way that infuses experiential learning into the classroom as much as possible. You learn so much from hands-on experiences.”
A Personalized Approach
Sellinger prides itself on its success stories and works closely with students every step of the way so they get the most out of the program. “We meet with students and figure out what they need to succeed in their career and then tailor the MBA to those needs. We continuously review their course schedules and discuss electives that might be a good fit with their professional interests and goals. We are committed to our students’ success as they navigate their way through our programs,” says Tarrant.
