Elementary Education with Special Education Dual Licensure Pathway

Undergraduate students wishing to pursue dual licensure in elementary education and special education can major in elementary education and minor in special education. In the senior year, dual licensure candidates complete a specialized internship that includes placements in both general education and special education settings.

Program Curriculum

  • Candidates complete the full elementary education major
  • The special education minor for dual licensure consists of four additional specialized courses to prepare candidates to address the exceptional needs of special education students.
  • Upon completion of the program and appropriate licensure exams, candidates are eligible for dual licensure in elementary education (grades 1 – 6) and special education (grades 1 – 8).

Clinical Experience

  • Candidates participate in required field experiences and service learning in Baltimore-area schools over their first three years, approximately 2 – 3 hours per week.
  • Senior year includes a full-year internship in a Professional Development School.
  • Dual licensure candidates will have experiences in general education and special education settings.
  • Interns are coached and supported by highly-qualified mentor teachers and Loyola Clinical Faculty throughout the clinical experience.
