Special Education

For anyone with an undergraduate degree looking to step forward in their career while making a lasting impact on children with learning differences.

The M.Ed. in Special Education is a 40-credit masters program offered through a hybrid format. The program will prepare candidates to provide equitable education and effective services to children with mild to moderate disabilities. Students will graduate ready to take on leadership roles in the field of special education. Candidates in the program will receive unparalleled educational experiences that emphasize academic excellence, strong clinical preparation, equity and social justice.

Explore the Curriculum

The Master’s in Special Education program focuses on both theoretical aspects of the field and practical application. The program offers students a strong foundation. Students will find themselves exploring management, methods, literacy, and research during their time with the program, culminating in a hands-on internship. 

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, you will:

• Be prepared to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of students with disabilities.
• Be prepared to teach students with mild to moderate disabilities and students with diverse learning needs using evidence-based strategies.
• Obtain Teacher Licensure in Special Education in Maryland.
• Be prepared for potential leadership roles in special education at the school level (IEP chair) and district levels.
• All initial certification programs in the School of Education include instruction in research-based literacy instruction aligned to the science of reading.

Graduates of the program will:  

• Develop advanced skills in designing, implementing and evaluating evidence-based practices that meet the special education needs of learners.
• Design and implement inclusive and culturally responsive practices that foster academic growth and social emotional learning for all leaners.
• Understand the conceptual underpinnings of special education, as well as policies that guide its implementation in school and community settings.
• Analyze contemporary issues surrounding special education and the impact of exceptionality on individuals and their families.
• Utilize data analysis techniques to monitor student progress, make informed instructional decisions, and adjust interventions to optimize learning outcomes for individuals with disabilities.
• Advocate for inclusive policies and practices at local, state, and national levels, demonstrating leadership in promoting equity, access, and quality education for individuals with disabilities within diverse educational contexts.
