How many credits is the English for Speakers of Other Languages Certificate?
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) certificate is a 15 credit program. There are five (5) three (3) credit courses. Three courses meet in person and two courses are fully online.
Can the courses in the ESOL Certificate be applied to a Master’s program?
Yes, one course can be applied to the Reading Specialist or Literacy Teacher programs. Upon completion, students may transfer the 9 credits into Loyola's M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction - English for Speakers of Other Languages.
How long will it take to complete the entire certificate?
The certificate can be completed within one (1) year. The participant will need to complete one (1) course in the summer, two (2) courses in the fall, and two (2) courses in the spring. During fall and spring semesters, students will take two eight week courses allowing the student to focus on one course at a time. During the fall and spring semesters, students will take one in person course and one fully online course.
Will the ESOL Certificate program certify me to teach ESOL? Will I need to complete the Praxis?
The ESOL certificate does not lead to ESOL certification. After completing the ESOL, an individual with Maryland teaching certification can seek additional ESOL endorsement by passing the Praxis II #5362 exam.
What is the tuition cost? Are payment plans available? Is financial aid available?
Loyola University Maryland approved tuition rates are located on the Tuition and Fees website. Loyola does offer payment plans. Yes, financial aid is available for the ESOL certificate. Participants will be required to take a minimum of one (1) course in the summer and two (2) courses in the fall and spring to be eligible for financial aid. Additionally, school system employees should contact their human resources office regarding tuition reimbursement.
Does this program require applicants to have initial certification?
It is not necessary for students to possess initial teacher licensure. This program is designed for all professionals. This program is also not limited to school based employees. Individuals who possess a Maryland teaching certification can seek additional ESOL endorsement by passing the Praxis II #5362 exam..
How do I register for the program?
You will need to complete the online application. We require official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended. We also require one letter of recommendation. The resume is optional, however, recommended.
