Loyola celebrates the life of Loyola friend and benefactor Mary C. Mangione, MSA ’52
Mary Cuba Mangione, recipient of the 2010 President’s Medal and a longtime benefactor of Loyola, passed away March 15, 2023. She was 92.
Mangione and her late husband, Nicholas, a former Loyola trustee, funded the acquisition of the Saint John’s Bible that is on permanent display at the Loyola/Notre Dame Library. The Mangione Pool at Loyola’s Fitness & Aquatic Center bears the family name.
Mangione graduated from Mount Saint Agnes College in 1952 before its merger with Loyola and was awarded the Mount Award in 2012.
“Mary's generous spirit will be remembered as an inspiration for all those whose lives she touched,” said Brian M. Oakes, ’99, MBA ’10, Loyola’s vice president for advancement. “Loyola is a stronger institution thanks to the transformational ways Mary and her family have contributed to our Jesuit, Catholic university. We are so grateful to her for helping to open doors for today’s students and tomorrow’s and enhancing the experience they enjoy while at Loyola.”
The couple established the Mangione Family Foundation, which provides philanthropic support and resources to nonprofit organizations in the greater Baltimore area. She was also a member of the John Early Society and served previously on Loyola’s Bright Minds, Bold Hearts Campaign Steering Committee.
“Mary Mangione believed passionately in the value of Catholic Jesuit education. Over the years, she and her husband have given generously to strengthen the education and experience we offer to our students,” said Terrence M Sawyer, J.D., president. “She will be missed and long remembered for the ways in which she helped ensure that our students would continue to grow in mind, body, and spirit for generations to come."
Mangione was an active member of the Baltimore community. She served as a member of several councils in and around the area, such as the Walters Art Museum, American Citizens for Italian Matters, Howard County Tourism Council, and Order of Sons of Italy in America. She also served as a trustee for the Baltimore Opera Company.
Several of her children and grandchildren received Loyola degrees.
Loyola will remember Mary Mangione Sunday, April 2, at the 11 a.m. Mass in Alumni Memorial Chapel on the Evergreen campus.
