Improving ninth grade ELA student outcomes with an informative twice-monthly teacher-to-parent email

Abstract:

I hypothesized that biweekly, informative teacher-to-parent emails would increase student grades, decrease rates of missing and late work, and increase parents' reported rates of connection to and support from the teacher. I collected data in the form of parent and student pre- and post-surveys, parent pre-and post-interviews, and students' gradebook data. The preliminary results of my semester-long study indicate that regular, informative communication does not affect student grades or rates of late and/or missing work, but does greatly improve parents' feelings of support and connection.
