The Future Donnelly Science Center

Rendering of new Donnelly Science Center

Loyola University Maryland broke ground in summer 2024 on a construction project to expand and enhance Donnelly Science Center, home to the University’s biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and nursing programs. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Donnelly Science Center has been home to Loyola’s science programs since 1978. As the University invests in strengthening its STEM programs through its strategic plan, Together We Rise: Loyola University Maryland's Strategic Plan for 2030, Donnelly is benefiting from an extensive renovation and expansion.

Donnelly will offer state-of-the-art facilities not just to the current programs it houses, but also to the University's new nursing program, which will launch in Fall 2025.

The Addition

An 18,200-square-foot addition will highlight the University’s exceptional science programs, bring more sunlight into the building, and create a more sustainable space for learning and research. The expanded space will add research labs, teaching labs, along with lounge, study, and huddle/collaboration areas for students. The University will also pursue LEED certification for the building’s environmental sustainability.

The Renovation

A full interior renovation of the four-story structure will maximize teaching and research lab space while providing more student collaboration areas. The lab and teaching spaces will be resized to the industry standard and add greater office space for faculty and staff growth.

A new HVAC system will be added throughout the building, along with other mechanical and electrical upgrades. A new curtainwall on the building will make the facility more energy-efficient, providing thermal comfort year-round.
