Modern Masters Reading Series to Feature Author and Poet Elizabeth SpiresLectures & Symposia

Spires is the author of six poetry collections as well as several books for children. Among her many awards are two National Endowment for the Arts poetry fellowships, a Whiting Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship. Her poems have been featured on National Public Radio and have appeared in The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, The New Criterion, and in many anthologies, including Contemporary American Poetry (7th edition) and The New Bread Loaf Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry. Her newest poetry collection is The Wave-Maker (Norton, 2008).

Commemoration of Martyrs MassSpecial Events

Each year, a line of white crosses along the academic Quad stands in memory of the martyrs of Central America. In this way, Loyola College honors those who have been killed because they stood up for the rights of the voiceless and because they made an option for the poor. This opening Mass will begin this period of commemoration.

"Urban Education in the 21st Century: What's Holding Us Back Now? Lectures & Symposia

Murrell, Jr., founding Dean of the School of Education, will present a keynote address and conversation designed to provoke Baltimore’s educational leaders to explore the critical questions necessary to begin a process of collaborative action aimed at effectively confronting the growing crisis in urban education. A group of Loyola students, faculty, administrators, staff and Baltimore community members will travel to the annual Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Columbus, Georgia. The Ignatian Family Teach-In is an annual gathering that serves both to honor the Jesuits and other martyrs in El Salvador and to protest the activities of the US military and government in the region.

Last Sunday at Beans and BreadService

8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. | Beans & Bread Center, 402 S. Bond St.
On the last Sunday of every month, Loyola students, faculty, staff, administration and their families can be found together in the kitchen of Beans & Bread preparing the meal for the day. It is a time of unity for the Loyola community and a chance to get to know other people on campus with the same interests, as well as people from the Baltimore community. Each last Sunday, the Loyola community takes full responsibility for funding, staffing and operating Beans & Bread Meal Program. If not for the Loyola community, Beans & Bread could not afford to be open on that Sunday.
