Employee Personal Web Page

Welcome to the exciting world of the Web! Now you can put stuff on the Web quickly and easily from your office! This Web page describes how Loyola employees can put Web pages up that contain information about themselves, the classes they teach, or even their families, their favorite activities, and links to their favorite Web pages.

How do I get a Web account, and what is my username?

You already have a Web account! It is built right into your Novell Network Login that you use every day when logging into your computer. As we will discuss later, publishing to the Web is as simple as saving your Web files to a network drive. (If that doesn't make sense... IT WILL!)

Cool! Once I have stuff up there, how will I see it on the Web?

Easy! From any Web browser just type in the following address:
http://www.evergreen.loyola.edu/~username
(Where "username" is your Novell Network Login username.)

NOTE:
That little squiggle (~) can be hard to find. It is located in the upper left corner of the keyboard. It is actually called a tilde (not a squiggle.)

First, Here Are Some Basics:

  • When you are looking at a Web site on the Internet, you are actually viewing a document that is stored on another computer. That other computer is called a WEBSERVER (a computer attached to the Internet that allows the world to view its pages.)
  • We have a WEBSERVER where you will be saving your Web pages. It is called the EVERGREEN WEBSERVER.
  • The EVERGREEN WEBSERVER is actually linked to your computer already through the network.
  • In order to publish your Web pages you will save them to the EVERGREEN WEBSERVER.
  • You will need to setup your computer to access the EVERGREEN WEBSERVER and publish to the Web.

How do I setup my computer to Publish to the Web?

There are many disk drives attached to your computer. You have a floppy drive (your "A:\" drive), a hard drive (your "C:\" drive), a CD-ROM drive (probably your "D:\" drive) and a couple NETWORK DRIVES (including your "G:\" drive and your "H:\" drive).

Your NETWORK DRIVES are actually connected to another computer on the Network. When you save a file to the network drive you are actually saving to the hard drive of that network computer.

Anything that you put on the "H:\" drive of you computer can be seen over the LAN (Local Area Network) network (not over the Web or Internet) by anyone connected to Loyola's LAN. You DO NOT publish to the Web using the "H:\" drive.

Most everything you put into the "G:\" drive remains personal to you. No one else can see it at all. It is just for your own stuff to be used only by you. There is one big exception to this:

If you create a folder and call it "www" in your "G:\" drive, anything you put in that folder is published on the Web!

Detailed Instruction For Setting Up Your Computer

  • You will only have to do this once.
  • The "G:\" drive is your link to the EVERGREEN WEBSERVER.
  • Your "G:\" drive is listed in the MY COMPUTER icon on your computer's desktop.

My Computer

  • Just go back to the desktop and double click on the MY COMPUTER icon. Once you open the MY COMPUTER icon, you may find it helpful to go under the VIEW menu and select "Details". Then you will see a list of items similar to these displayed:
  • Find the drive labeled (G:).
  • Double click on your "G:\" drive icon to open the drive.
  • Click on the FILE menu on your "G:\" drive window. Click on the word NEW and then (on the menu that opens on the right) select FOLDER. You should see an icon that looks similar to this:

New Folder

  • When the new folder appears type www [ENTER]. Your folder should now be named "www."

www Folder

NOTE:
If the folder would not name, or needs to be renamed, just RIGHT-CLICK (click the right mouse button while pointing at the folder) and choose the RENAME option. Then name the folder as described above.

  • Now DOUBLE-CLICK on the WWW folder to open it.
  • While in the WWW folder, go up under the FILE menu again and select NEW and the FOLDER again. Name this folder IMAGES.
  • NOTE: The IMAGES folder is very important. Any graphics that you are going to place on your web page should be stored in the IMAGES folder before you put them on your web page.
  • CONGRATULATIONS!  You have set-up your computer and you are ready to start churning out web pages!

Graphics

LEGAL STUFF: Now this is important! Though it is possible to download any graphic on the web for your own use IT ISN'T ALWAYS LEGAL to use them on your web page. Unless a site expressly states that its images are "royalty free", "public domain", or are available for your use on your web page then you cannot use them legally. There are some great places to get some graphics though!

Free Graphics

Microsoft's Image Gallery has some great free images. Check it out at http://office.microsoft.com.

To Download a Graphic

If there is a public domain graphic that you want to download for your Web page simply RIGHT CLICK on that graphic and save it in the IMAGES folder in your WWW folder on your LOCAL DRIVE.

Let's Make a Page

To create your Web pages, we strongly recommend that you use Microsoft FrontPage.  If you need to have FrontPage installed on your computer, please call the Technology Service Center at 410.617.5555 and place a ticket for installation.  If you have FrontPage 2002, then you are ready to start making your Web pages!

Not sure how to use FrontPage???  Not a problem...  Both Element K and the Microsoft E-Learning Library have courses and e-books on how to use FrontPage.  Both provide an excellent introduction to the product and will help you create your Web pages in no time.  Once you have finsihed learning about FrontPage, be sure to come back to this Web page and finish reading the following sections!

Saving Your Pages

When you save your pages, be sure to save them in the "www" folder you created in your "G:\" drive. When you save a Web page always make the filename ONE WORD with NO PUNCTUATION and end the filename with a period and the letters html. Also, it will make things easier if you make every letter LOWER-CASE. (Example: filename.html).

IMPORTANT: Your index.html (Your Main Page)

When someone visits your Web site, there needs to be a MAIN PAGE that comes up first and welcomes him or her to your site. This page then links off to the other pages in your site. In order to designate a Web page as this MAIN PAGE just save it in your "www" directory with a filename of index.html.

Congratulations!!!

You have now published your own Web site! Check it out (as described in the beginning of this page).

What do I do if I need help?

If you should require the installation of or the troubleshooting of FrontPage, please call the Technology Service Center at x5555.
