Self-Assessment Tools

Assessment is an important and necessary part of the career search that occurs throughout a lifetime as your career path evolves. Self assessment inventories can help you develop an accurate picture of your personal strengths, needs, and preferences as well as your career interests, ultimately helping you to choose a major and develop a sound career plan. Make an appointment with a Career Advisor to complete a test and discuss your results. The Career Center offers the following on-line assessment inventories:

Focus
Focus, a career and educational planning system, consists of the following self exploration assessments: current career planning status, interests and work values, education and training, personality and life values, leisure time preferences, and current or future skills. Click Focus Online to get started.

Strong Interest Inventory
The SII is based on the idea that individuals are more satisfied and productive when they work in jobs that they find interesting and when they work with people who have similar interests. The SII takes about 25 minutes to complete and contains 317 items that measure your interests in a wide range of occupations, occupational activities, hobbies, leisure activities and types of people.

Self Directed Search
The SDS takes about 15 minutes to complete and will help you determine careers that best match your interests and abilities. You can then begin to explore the careers that you might find most satisfying based upon your attributes.

Myers Briggs Type Indicator
One of the most popular personality assessments, this tool helps you realize your individual personality type and can help point you in some possible career directions.
