Apply to Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The following options are available for MAT:
- Elementary Education (grades 1-6)
- Secondary Education (grades 7-12): biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, earth/space science, physics, or social studies
- Secondary Education (grades PreK-12): art, French, music vocal/instrumental, or Spanish

*At the discretion of the department, applications will continue to be reviewed after the application deadline on a space-available basis.
International Students Application Deadlines
International students may only be enrolled in full-time degree programs. In order to maintain a full-time status, students may be required to travel between Loyola's three campuses in Baltimore, Timonium, and Columbia. Public transportation is not available. International students must submit a complete application for admission (including all supplemental documentation) by the deadlines shown below.

Required application materials include:
- Online application form
- Nonrefundable $60 application fee.
- Essay/personal statement. Describe in 500-750 words, one or more of the following sets of questions:
- Why have you chosen to apply to Loyola? How do you see yourself fitting into the School of Education’s Jesuit mission of social justice? How will you meet the challenges of teaching in diverse classrooms of the 21st century?
- Why do you want to become a teacher? What brought you to this decision and what impact do you hope to have as a teacher? How will you meet the challenges of teaching in diverse classrooms of the 21st century?
- Official transcripts from all postsecondary colleges or universities attended. This includes transcripts from part-time study and from institutions that have awarded the applicant a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree or an advanced certificate. Students who fail to submit the final degree-posted transcript will not be permitted to register.
Applicants who hold degrees or have earned credits from non-U.S. institutions (excluding study abroad programs) must have a course-by-course evaluation and translation of their academic records done by an approved evaluation services agency before they can be considered for admission to a degree program. Loyola recommends World Education Services, Inc. (www.wes.org).
- Two professional/academic letters of recommendation (MAT recommendation form required).
- Optional Resume or curriculum vita.
- Praxis I scores from the Educational Testing Service are required of all Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) applicants. Loyola's institution code is RA5370. Qualifying scores on the SAT, ACT, or GRE tests may be substituted for Praxis I performance for MAT applicant as follows:
- SAT taken after 2005, math and critical reading composite score of 1100*
- SAT taken between 4/95 and 2005, math and verbal composite score of 1100*
- SAT taken prior to 4/95, math and verbal composite score of 1000*
(For SAT results, call College Board 866-756-7346 to request an archive copy. Request that the copy is sent to your home address and then send a copy to Office of Graduate Admission.)
- ACT composite score of 24
- GRE taken prior to September 1, 2011, verbal and quantitative composite score of 1,000*
- GRE taken after September 1, 2011, verbal and quantitative composite score of 297*
- *Composite scores must come from exams taken in the same calendar year.
- A personal interview may be required.
- TOEFL score report. The TOEFL examination is required only if English is not the applicant's native language or if the applicant has not completed a degree program taught in English. TOEFL scores must be from tests administered within two years of the application deadline. Official scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service. Loyola's institution code is 5370.
- International Student Supplemental Forms (required only if a student visa is needed, and must be complete no later than 90 days prior to the start of the program).
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that a completed application and all supplemental materials are received by the application deadline. Supplemental materials, once received, become the property of Loyola University Maryland and cannot be returned.

Additional Application Information
It is the policy of departmental admission committees to give promising applicants the opportunity to undertake graduate work. A careful examination of an applicant's academic and professional qualifications precedes every admission decision. The committees look for previous academic achievement by considering an applicant's undergraduate and graduate records. Work experience is assessed through the presentation of a resume or vitae and professional references.
Applicants accepted for graduate study will be advised in writing. At the time of admission, individuals will be informed of any courses for which they have qualified for advanced standing and/or additional courses or prerequisites requiring completion before commencing their graduate studies. A program advisor who assists in planning a program of study will be assigned, and students are responsible for discussing any special needs they may have with their advisor.
