Dean's Message

Welcome to Loyola University Maryland’s School of Education Web site. I urge you to explore the various programs, events and activities described on these pages to gain a deeper understanding of our academic curriculum and how it prepares graduates to make a difference in the classroom, particularly in urban settings.

Urban education is a complex enterprise – composed of considerations and issues of practice, policy and pedagogy. It is this complexity that poses a challenge in addressing the needs of urban schooling in the 21st century.

Loyola is dedicated to examining and unpacking this complexity. We view urban education as more than a collection of disciplines, but as a field of intellectual inquiry as well as practice that appropriately integrates the disciplines. Within these Web pages you will learn about our variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, licensure opportunities and research opportunities in fields of urban education. You can also learn about the major centers associated with the School of Education, including the Center for Innovation in Urban Education and the Center for Montessori Education.

Loyola’s School of Education holds a unique leadership position in higher education through our unwavering commitment to academic excellence, service and social justice in urban schools, communities and neighborhoods. We strive to educate the whole person, in intellect, consciousness and spirit, in a tradition captured by the Latin phrase cura personalis

Our Center for Innovation in Urban Education is dedicated to exemplifying and inspiring change that will prevail over the many challenges of urban teaching, learning and schooling. Our mission is to encourage our students to serve, change and improve the community, as well as inspire other institutions to take on greater and more charitable commitments by leading by example.

As we move forward, we will remain steadfast to these commitments and indeed increase the number and broaden the scope of our initiatives to ensure brighter futures for countless students. I hope you find in these pages opportunities and insights that connect with your hopes, wishes and exciting future in education.

Sincerely,
Peter C. Murrell, Jr., Ph.D.
Founding Dean, School of Education
