Robert W. Simmons III, Ed.D.
Co-Directors, Center for Innovation in Urban Education

The Center for Innovation in Urban Education (CIUE) is dedicated to supporting scholarship in urban education, proactive work in urban communities, and the grounded research of scholars dedicated to confronting the educational, social and developmental challenges facing urban children and youth. Through collaborations with various entities interested in urban education, the Center aims to improve the educational experience of students in Baltimore, as well as other urban enclaves in the United States.

The Center for Urban Education is dedicated to supporting deep, critical inquiry, practice-based research and community-based reform efforts that focus on the problems and issues confronting urban schools and the education of urban children and youth. Faculty, senior fellows, graduate students, and research affiliates of the School of Education will be provided research training opportunities and support based on their individual interests and/or projects in urban educational issues; a support always linked to actual ongoing work done in urban settings and schools. Through collaborations with top-notch scholars, neighborhood associations, urban schools and community-based organizations, the Center seeks to support efforts to improve the quality of educational experiences of children and their families in urban areas. The Center is the engine in the School of Education for building connections and promoting the joint inquiry among university-based researchers, leading scholars in the field, faculty and students, focused on issues of improving urban education.
