Certificate of Advanced Study

Candidates for the Certificate of Advanced Study must have completed a Master’s degree in Counseling or Psychology and are seeking additional coursework for professional and/or licensure reasons. The program of study provides advanced level didactic courses, intensive in-depth supervisory experiences, pastoral integration seminar and an optional internship experience. Students employed in the counseling field may submit their work for consideration as an optional internship. If approved, the certificate program enriches the work experience with advanced-level didactic and supervisory experiences. The certificate program prepares the candidate for advanced-level practice as a pastoral counselor.

The C.A.S. requires the satisfactory completion of 30 credits and provides an optional opportunity for a post-master’s internship experience of 800 hours. It also provides an opportunity to member status in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and certification by the National Board for Certified Counselors, and state licensure or certification. State licensure and certification are ideal reasons to enroll in the Certificate of Advanced Studies program.

Individuals who pursued a degree other than Loyola’s M.S. in Pastoral Counseling enrolling without master’s level theology are required to take two courses in addition to PC 700 Pastoral Integration:

PC 665 Contemporary Religious Perspectives
PC 608 Theological Anthropology

C.A.S. students, with their academic advisor, will design an appropriate program of study for the 21 remainder credits. Please view the academic advising section of the website for more information.
