GEDCO's Food Pantry in Need of Donations
Loyola's community partner GEDCO's pantry, called CARES, is in desperate need of food donations. Summers have always been difficult for the food pantry. This year, with the rising price of food and fuel, is no exception. We are all feeling the squeeze on our income, but this has been particularly hard for the clients at CARES. They would deeply appreciate if you would consider picking up a couple extra items our next trip to the supermarket. The pantry desperately needs:

  • Rice
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Pasta
  • Spaghetti Sauce
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly
  • Canned Soup
  • Canned Vegetables

Drop off donations at CARES on Wednesday’s between 9 a.m. - noon. Or bring the donation to CCSJ and we will see that it gets delivered. They also desperately need a computer (used is fine) XP or better. Contact Andrea Goicochea at mgoicochea@loyola.edu or ext. 5823 for more information.

New Campus Car Service
In an effort to provide additional transportation resources to the College Community, we will be introducing a company to provide additional car service in and around campus. The company is called Envioride. They use environmentally friendly vehicles to shuttle customers in and around the Baltimore area. The fleet is comprised of Toyota Camry Hybrids, Toyota Highlander Hybrids and the Mercedes-Benz Bluetec. Envioride uses a flat fee system that is published and can be found in the lobbies and at the desks of many of our residence halls. This service is available to the entire Campus Community and is competitive with the local cab companies. For reservations, call 301-549-4114 or Mike Rogers at 443-939-4334. Envioride vehicles will pick up and drop off customers in or around the existing taxi stands at 5104 York Road, Butler lot and at Newman towers. Our goal is to provide the community with an alternative to the present taxi system, provide better service options, promote improved interaction with drivers and improve the overall transportation experience. Problems or concerns that may arise can be sent to the Public Safety web site at www.loyola.edu/publicsafety/, click on taxi cab disputes.

Loyola Joins Electricity Emergency Load Response Program
The demand for electricity in our area is increasing beyond generation capacity, leaving Maryland and our neighboring states vulnerable to power shortages so severe that brownouts and blackouts may be in our future. In response to this pending crisis, PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organizer that ensures reliability of the electricity grid in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland as well as 10 other states and Washington, D.C. promotes and manages the Emergency Load Response Program (ELRP). This program uses voluntary electricity curtailment by commercial, industrial and institutional customers as a “last line of defense” for the grid before imposing rolling brownouts and/or blackouts.

Loyola, along with other area colleges including Goucher, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and the University of Maryland, have joined the emergency response program which means we have volunteered to reduce consumption of electricity during periods of high stress on the Mid- Atlantic grid. When an emergency is declared by PJM, we will respond by turning off unused lights, turning up cooling set points in some buildings and taking other measures as appropriate to reduce our consumption of electricity. ELRP events are called by PJM very judiciously and infrequently (an average of two times per year) when the grid is at its breaking point. The College will receive at least a two hour advanced notification prior to curtailment so that we can provide notification and guidance to the Campus Community concerning energy conservation measures to be taken during the curtailment period which is an average of 4 hours in duration.

If you have questions or comments concerning this program, please contact Charlie Riordan at criordan@loyola.edu or ext. 2200.
