Jeffrey Barnett, Psy.D., will receive the Distinguished Psychologist Award for Contributions to Psychology and Psychotherapy from the American Psychological Association's division of psychotherapy at the group's August 2010 annual convention in San Diego.
The award recognizes significant and noteworthy career contributions and accomplishments that significantly advance the profession of psychology and the field of psychotherapy, whether in practice, research, or training. Barnett was chosen based on his significant scholarly work in research and publications that have advanced the profession of psychology; his longstanding work as a mentor to junior colleagues and graduate students; his efforts resulting in the development and advancement of the field of psychotherapy; and his outstanding leadership in the profession of psychology.
Barnett, who joined Loyola in 1996, specializes in ethics, legal, and professional practice issues in psychology. Specifically, these include distress; impairment and self-care; boundary issues and multiple relationships; supervision; confidentiality; informed consent; and advocacy. A graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta, Barnett holds master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Yeshiva University.
In 2009, Barnett received the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to the Independent Practice of Psychology. His award address, "The Complete Practitioner: Still a Work in Progress," was published in 2009 by American Psychologist, the American Psychological Association's flagship journal.
The American Psychological Association (APA) is the largest professional organization of psychologists and those training to become psychologists. It has approximately 150,000 members. Each year, the APA recognizes top psychologists with the "Distinguished Contributions" Awards; these awards are the highest honors given by the APA, and among the highest honors that a psychologist or psychology researcher can receive.
