September 12th @ 4-7PM: The Math Club will be having a table at the activites fair. Please go to the table to sign up for the Math Club, or email Jon Celso. First meeting will be scheduled soon. October 2006: The October Sudoku Problem of the Month will be on its way. Keep checking the website for posting of the puzzle. March 2006: The March Sudoku Problem of the Month is available here to view and print. Print copies will be available at these locations as well. The winner of last month's puzzle is Jim Hanley '06. There were 20 submissions, and 19 were correct and entered in the raffle for the prize of a $20 gift certificate to the college bookstore. Congrats to those who completed the puzzle, including the winner, and good luck to you all for this month's puzzle! March 14th - 17th: PI WEEK!!!!! The Mathematical Sciences Dept. and the Math Club present their annual Pi Week Festivities. Note: The dates, times and locations are subject to change, so keep posted if changes do occur. The lineup of events is the following (as of 3/12):
Tuesday, March 14th - Viewing of "π" (pi) in Upper Primos @ (revised 3/12) Thursday, March 16th - Pie Eating and Memorization Contests in Upper Primos @ 8PM Friday, March 17th - Pieing of professors and students from 12-2PM
If you need something to pump you up for Pi week, watch this movie. March 16th @ 8PM: The above mentioned Pie Eating and Memorization Contests will be held in Upper Primos. The Eating Contest is based on how fast you can eat the pie, and the Memorization contest is based on how many digits of Pi you can memorize. The winner of both contests each wins a FREE PI DAY T-SHIRT, and the winner of the pie eating contest will win an ADDITIONAL SECRET PRIZE!!! To sign up for either/both contests, email Christa Shuman by Thursday, March 16th at noon. The entry fee is $5 for the Pie Eating Contest, and FREE ENTRY for the Pi Memorization Contest. You can find an approximation of Pi by clicking on the link. March 17th @ 12-2PM: It's Pi-A-Professor Day!!! For $2 a pie, and 3 for $5, you have the chance to hit a professor (and select students/staff) with a pie. The lineup of people will be revealed later this week. PI DAY T-SHIRTS are on sale for $10, which can be paid with cash OR Evergreen. March 29th @ 6PM: The Spring Science Dodgeball Showdown will feature teams from all of the science departments in Knott Hall and Donnelly Science Center at the multi-purpose court at the FAC. T-Shirts are being made up for the event, so come out and support your favorite department by buying a shirt or showing up the FAC to "have a ball". Friday, February 3rd @ : Katie Ansaldi '06 will give a student seminar titled "Rank Computations on a Family of Quartic Curves: Elliptic Curves and their Applications". The talk has a little of linear regression, geometry, group theory, number theory, and even hash tables. So there should be something for everyone. This seminar involves Katie's research from her summer REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates). The abstract is as follows: I will give a brief introduction to elliptic curves and some definitions about them, specifically discussing a family of quartic curves y²=(1-x²)(1-k^2x²). I will show some applications to Heron Triangles and rational Diophantine m-tuples with this family of curves. I will then discuss an algorithm that we used to find two curves of rank 6 from the family discussed above.
The seminar will be held in Knott Hall, room 305. February 2006: Introducing the Sudoku Problem of the Month contest! Click here for information regarding the contest, including submission guidelines, so it's a must read. All submissions are due by March 1st. Click here to view a printable PDF copy of this month's puzzle. You can also find hard copies of this month's problem at these following locations: - Boulder Gardens Cafe - Salsa Rico - The 2nd Floor Entrance to Maryland Hall - The 1st Floor of Sellinger near Records and SAS - The Bridge Entrance to Knott Hall - The Math Seminar Room (KH303) - The Entrance to Donnelly Science by the Computer Science Dept. - The Entrance to Donnelly Science by the Engineering Dept. - Primo's - The Ground Floor of Campion Tower - The Study in Jenkins Hall The contest is open to all students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The prize is a $20 gift certificate to the bookstore. GOOD LUCK! February 6th - February 27th: Has there been a professor that you would looooove to hit in the face with a pie. Well here's your chance! On March 14, the Math Club will be kicking off its annual Pi week festivities with the infamous pie tossing. From now until February 27th at noon, a survey is available on Blackboard to see who you would like to throw a pie at. Want to know how you can vote (and believe me, every vote counts)? Follow these instructions: 1. Log on to Blackboard 2. Click on the "Organizations" tab 3. In the search box, type in "Math Club" 4. If you are not a member of the Math Club, there should be an option on the right-hand side to "enroll". Click on that option. Otherwise, just go into the Math Club group. NOTE:You cannot participate in the survey unless you are enrolled in the Math Club Blackboard group. 5. The survey is under the "Documents" portion of the sidebar and follow the instructions to vote. If you have aby questions, send an email to the Math Club president, Jon Celso. February 10th @ 4:00PM: The Vice President and President of the Math Club will be giving a talk about their trip to SAMSI (Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute) during November of last semester. The purpose of the trip was attending their Two-Day Undergraduate Workshop, which is held each semester. The focus of the last workshop was financial mathematics with some econometrics and statstics. The talk will be held in Knott Hall, room 305. Light refreshments will be served. Keep posted for more activities. If you would like to join the Math Club to keep in touch with Math Club activites, please email Jon Celso at jrcelso@loyola.edu. |
