         Welcome

Mission Statement of the Mathematical Sciences Department:

In keeping with the Jesuit Catholic mission of Loyola College, the Mathematical Sciences Department strives for excellence in education. Our goal is to open students' minds to the power, beauty, and utility of the mathematical sciences and to develop their conceptual understanding, problem solving ability, and analytical thinking skills. The department's faculty is strongly committed to undergraduate teaching and to giving Mathematical Sciences majors a solid and broad-based foundation for a variety of careers as well as for graduate study. Faculty members conduct research in their fields of specialty and also keep abreast of curricular reform and creative uses of technology.

         What's New?

Farewell, Class of 2008, and Godspeed!

Class of 2008 Majors celebrate with Faculty
Members of the Mathematical Sciences Class of 2008 celebrate with Mathematical Sciences faculty
    at Ryan's Daughter.

Applications are invited for a full-time, one-year visiting faculty position for the AY 2008-09.  Click here for more information.

Congratulations to Kristen Stone '08 and Doug Alban '08, who were both honored at the 2008 Loyola College Athletics Banquet on April 28.  Kristen received the Ernest Lagna award, given annually to a female senior student-athlete who has exhibited excellence both in the classroom and on the field.  Doug received the Diane-Geppi Aikens Inspiration Award for overcoming obstacles and adversity.  Way to go, Kristen and Doug!

Congratulations are also in order for Matt Filipski '08, Erin McCartin '08, Nicole Dikun '09, Cen-bi Liu '09, and Janine LoBue '09.  Matt, Erin and Nicole were inducted into the Loyola College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest undergraduate honors organization.  Nicole was one of only four juniors inducted at Loyola.  Cen-bi and Janine were inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the Honor Society of Jesuit Institutions of Higher Education.  We are very proud of our distinguished majors!

April is Mathematics Awareness Month!  This year's theme is Mathematics and Voting.

Congratulations to the two teams of Loyola students who participated in the 2008 Mathematical Contest in Modeling.  Both teams were awarded Honorable Mention status.  Out of the 1,162 teams that participated in this year's contest, only 14% earned a rating higher than Honorable Mention.  We are proud of our two teams of students: Nicole Dikun '09, Matt Filipski '08, and Lisa Schneider '10; and Jomy Varghese '10, Stephen Ryan '08, and Erin McCartin '08.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has established a walk-in tutoring lab in Knott Hall 303.  Loyola College students wishing to receive free tutoring for lower level math or stat courses are welcome to use the service.  The lab will be open between the hours of 5pm - 8pm Monday through Thursday. The tutoring lab is already operating, so drop in and bring your questions with you.

Attention prospective students!  Loyola College has been awarded a major grant from the National Science Foundation to fund four-year scholarships for as many as 14 members of the Class of 2012 who plan to major in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering Science, Mathematical Sciences or Physics.  Click here for more information.

Congratulations to Michael Paul '10, who scored 2 points on this year's Putnam Exam.  This placed Michael in the top 50% of the 3,753 participating college and university students across the United States and Canada.  The annual mathematics competition began in 1938 and is organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).  Way to go, Mike!

Check out the Fall 2008 course offerings in the Mathematical Sciences Department.

Congratulations to Cen-bi Liu '09, who has been accepted to participate in a summer undergraduate research program at CERN in Switzerland.  CERN is the world's largest particle physics lab.  Cen will be working with a group from the University of Michigan on the networking system of data distribution.  Cen was also spotlighted in February on Loyola's homepage.  To read more about Cen, click here.

The 27th Annual Career Night in the Mathematical Sciences was held on Thursday, April 10 from 8-10pm in the Fourth Floor Programming Room of the Andrew White Student Center.  Pictures of the event

The 2008 Pi Mu Epsilon Initiation and Mathematical Awards Ceremony took place on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00am in the Fourth Floor Programming Room of the Andrew White Student Center.  The guest speaker was Michael Schneider, '97, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Pictures of the event

Hey majors! Spend the summer experiencing a different part of the country, while gaining valuable experience in mathematics or statistics.  There are many opportunities for summer internships this year.  The application deadlines are quickly approaching.  Check out the internships page.
