Remote LNDL Database Access
Students may access the Loyola/Notre Dame Library (LNDL) website at http://www.lndl.org or http://www.loyola.edu/library for book holdings, av materials, and periodical databases, including among others Expanded Academic Index, Business and Company Resource Center, ABI/Inform, Compustat, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, EIUViewswire, IEEE, ERIC, ComDisDome, Religion Index, PsycINFO, Science and Social Sciences Citation Indexes, Mental Measurements Yearbook, and LexisNexis, from anywhere they have internet access. Most of these databases contain full-text articles. We frequently add databases, so you will want to visit the library website often to see what's new.
To access periodical databases remotely, students must have a current library barcode. This barcode is the fourteen-digit number, beginning with 22425, on your ID. You may get an ID card from the receptionist at the Columbia Center. (If you do not have a barcode or if your barcode does not work, please call the LNDL Circulation Desk at 410-617-6801.)
Shared Catalog and Borrowing from Participating Libraries
The new LNDL catalog is shared among Mount St. Mary's University in Emittsburg, MD; Hood College in Frederick, MD; Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD; and Villa Julie College in Stevenson, MD. You may limit your search to items owned by LNDL or locate materials on your topic owned by all of the participating colleges. Books requested from the other libraries in this consortium will be delivered to LNDL within 24 hours of the request and, if you request, will be forwarded to the Columbia Center. Requests can be made by selecting Request on the top of the catalog record and filling out the form. Be certain to select Loyola - Columbia as the pick-up location.
Books can be renewed online before the due date. Click on Library Account on the left side of the homepage. After the due date, you may call Circulation at 410-617-6801.
Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Students may request delivery of books, media, or periodical articles to the Columbia Center through the electronic Interlibrary Loan form on the LNDL homepage or through the catalog by clicking on "Request" on the top of the record. If LNDL "owns" the item, it should arrive at the center within two to three days. Check with the receptionist to pick up the item.
LNDL can also get books and articles from other libraries and deliver them to the Columbia Center. Use the same electronic Interlibrary Loan form. Books and articles requested from other libraries can take two to three weeks to arrive, longer during busy times of the semester.
To save yourself time, before requesting articles, check to see if the article is available on one of LNDL's full-text databases. If you are "in" a database, click on Article Linker. Or, from the library homepage, under Find E-Journals, type in the name of the journal. If it is available electronically for the dates needed, click on the database link and follow the instructions.
Reciprocal Borrowing from Baltimore Area Libraries
The Loyola/Notre Dame Library has established reciprocal borrowing privileges with other college and university libraries. Students with current Loyola ID cards may borrow books directly from participating libraries; however, individual libraries may restrict the number and type of materials that may be borrowed. Materials borrowed from participating libraries must be returned directly to those libraries.
Most on-line catalogs for participating libraries can be searched through the individual college or university homepages or through Sailor (http://www.sailor.lib.md.us). (Note: You will not have access to the periodical databases at other colleges and universities.) Participating libraries include Baltimore Hebrew University, Columbia Union College, Coppin State University, Goucher College, Hood College, Maryland Institute College of Art, Morgan State University, Mount St. Mary's University, St. Mary's Seminary, Towson University, University of Baltimore, UMBC, Villa Julie College, Washington College, and McDaniel College.
The reference librarians can answer informational and database questions over the phone or by
e-mail through AskALibrarian on the library homepage or by Instant Messaging (IM). You may also access the 24/7 chat service, staffed by academic librarians in the participating Jesuit network across the US. In addition, a librarian is occasionally available at the Columbia Center or by appointment to provide database instruction and research assistance.
