The literacy program in Loyola University Maryland’s School of Education will recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding educators and their impact on their students, schools, and communities, on Feb. 25, 2013, from 6 - 7 p.m. in the AWSC 4th Floor Program Room. The evening will feature a keynote address by Dr. Stergios Botzakis. Dr. Botzakis is an associate professor in the Theory and Practice in Teacher Education Department at The University of Tennessee. He received his doctorate from the University of Georgia in 2006, and prior to that he spent five years teaching middle school reading, English, and study skills in Baltimore and the Boston area. He was an editorial assistant for Reading Research Quarterly and was also one of the founding editors for the Journal of Language and Literacy Education, an open-access, online journal.
Currently Dr. Botzakis teaches classes on content area reading, middle school education, working with struggling adolescent readers, and theoretical models of reading. His research interests include middle and secondary education, adolescent literacies, popular culture, and media literacy. He has been published in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, English Journal, and Teacher Education Quarterly.
The keynote address is followed by a presentation of the 2013 Literacy Leader and Literacy Educator of the Year Awards. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Teacher leaders play a crucial role in our education system. They provide inspired and engaging instruction for their students, mentor and support other teachers, and assist principals in the overall school mission, all of which combine to lead to improvements in teaching and learning. The awards honor those who promote literacy, demonstrate innovation in practice, exhibit principled leadership within their school or communities, and model lifelong learning as members of the professional literacy community.
