Loyola University Maryland's undergraduate programs in education prepare you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to be an effective educator in any classroom. Our program offers a strong liberal arts foundation combined with intense knowledge development and field-based experiences. Teacher candidates are prepared for teaching through a program which blends theory with practice. Through field experiences and service learning courses, education majors (and minors) obtain experience working with diverse children in urban and suburban school settings. Accreditation

Loyola's programs in elementary and secondary education is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. Graduates automatically meet academic requirements for licensure in Maryland and in other states with reciprocity agreements.

Pathways for Teacher Licensure

Education majors are often placed in a school setting every semester throughout the program of study. The field experience is designed for teacher candidates to become acquainted with schools and connect course theory to class practices they observe. Candidates are encouraged to work with individuals and small groups as appropriate. Internships are supervised with local schools with the School of Education.

Elementary Education Major

The elementary education program provides a comprehensive understanding of the general field of education and a cross-section of courses in English, social studies, science, and math. The program emphasizes field experience and service learning in various subject areas.

Secondary Education Minor

A major in a specific content area with a minor in secondary education provides a path to licensure for those wishing to teach biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, physics, or social studies in a secondary setting (grades 7-12) or visual arts, music, and world languages (French, German, or Spanish) in grades PK-12.

Elementary and Special Education Dual Licensure Pathway

Undergraduate students wishing to pursue dual licensure in elementary education and special education can major in elementary education and minor in special education. In the senior year, dual licensure candidates complete a specialized internship that includes placements in both general education and special education settings.

B.A./B.S. Master of Arts in Teaching Program

Undergraduate students from other disciplines who wish to be licensed at the middle or high school level (grades 7-12) may participate in a five-year program resulting in a bachelor's degree within their area of major and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.

Minors (available to all majors)

Urban Education Minor

The Minor in Urban Education is designed to give students an overview of the historical, social, political, economic, and cultural complexities of urban education in the United States. Students are required to take at least three of the five courses in the School of Education.

Special Education Minor

The minor in special education is designed to provide students with the skills needed for working with children with exceptionalities. The minor consists of a series of five courses and one field experience. Two of the five courses satisfy major requirements for Elementary Education.
