This year’s Multicultural Curriculum Infusion Workshop will begin on Monday, May 14 and end at midday on Friday, May 18, in time for Baccalaureate Mass. This annual workshop assists faculty as they infuse traditional courses with discipline-specific content that draws attention to diversity issues within the field. For those who want to develop and revise courses that will meet the diversity course requirement, the workshop provides advice and support. Joining us again this year will be Dr. Helen Fox of the University of Michigan’s Sweetland Writing Center) who visited first in 2004. Her workshop was so successful, and addressed issues important to Loyola faculty so well that we have invited her back again to share her knowledge and experience with this year’s participants. Dr. Fox’s biographical sketch, examples and summaries of her work and a statement of her philosophy can be found at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~hfox/. At Loyola, faculty who have attended MCIW with Helen Fox have developed new courses, improved existing courses, and gained more confidence in their pedagogical choices for each of the classes they teach. Participants have noted a number of benefits associated with attending MCIW. Participants develop new diversity-infused course in their discipline; revise or develop a new course that can be submitted to meet the diversity course requirement; develop an active, supportive, and collaborative network of colleagues who are currently teaching diversity-infused or approved diversity courses; and extend their knowledge and expertise in developing and teaching diversity courses and within their discipline. The theme and title of the 2007 workshop is Diversity and the Teaching and Learning Process. We will look closely at: - how and why diversity courses differ from “traditional” courses across disciplines;
- a range of teaching frameworks that are most successful when teaching diversity courses;
- how diversity infusion helps faculty integrate important Core Values into their courses;
- what faculty can do to prepare to teach diversity courses well to undergraduate students.
We will use Dr. Fox’s book When Race Breaks Out: Conversations about Race and Racism in the College Classroom (2001) to guide some of our discussions and activities. Additionally, participants will be supplied with a notebook with supplemental information and materials for the workshop. The workshop will require full-day attendance Monday through Thursday, and will end at noon on Friday before Baccalaureate Mass. Lunch will be provided daily. All registrants must submit a syllabus at the time of registration that will be revised during the workshop. Bring an additional copy to include in your workshop materials and to use throughout the week. As is customary, Loyola faculty will receive a $1,000 stipend after attending the workshop and submitting a revised syllabus to the Office of Academic Affairs and Diversity. However, all revised syllabi must be submitted by June 29, 2007, to receive the stipend. You may register for the Workshop at http://www.loyola.edu/academics/diversity/mciw.
