Loyola University Maryland undergraduate admission counselors Christina Verga, ’10, Elisse Cortez, and Andrew Cevasco, ’11, will travel to Staten Island and New Jersey Dec. 15-16 to participate in “Operation Apps: Taking College By Storm,” an initiative to assist high school seniors affected by Hurricane Sandy complete their college applications.
The effort, sponsored and organized by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), coordinates help centers at five colleges in New Jersey, Long Island, and Staten Island. Students will have the opportunity to meet with college admission officers to review their college applications and essays, refine their college lists, and discuss financial aid options. Computer labs also will be available for students to submit applications online.
“I’m so proud that members of our admission team are dedicating their time and expertise to such an important initiative,” said Elena Hicks, dean of undergraduate admission at Loyola. “Already a significant undertaking, the college application process can be even more difficult for students and their families still struggling to recover from Hurricane Sandy’s devastation. By offering applicants critical, additional support and guidance, Elisse, Christina, and Andrew exemplify Loyola’s commitment to serving others in accordance with the University’s Jesuit mission.”
Cevasco, who grew up in New Jersey, will volunteer at a help center at Berkeley College in Paramus, N.J., on Dec. 15. Verga, also originally from New Jersey, will volunteer at Brookdale Community College in Hazlet, N.J., the same day. Cortez will help students at Wagner College on Staten Island, N.Y., on Dec. 16. Help centers will also be open at Adelphi University and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey on Dec. 15. More information about all of the sessions and the Operation Apps initiative is available on NACAC’s website.
