Loyola University Maryland’s Julio Fine Arts Gallery will feature “Raíces y Influencias” (“Roots and Influences”), an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and carvings by Baltimore artists Tom Hyatt and René Treviño, from Monday, Sept. 12 – Thursday, Oct. 13. An artists’ talk and reception will be held in the Julio Fine Arts Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 5-7 p.m.
“Raíces y Influencias” is an exhibition of recent work by Hyatt and Treviño that documents the liberating effects of globalization. A heavy Latin American influence serves as an entryway for both artists to explore worlds outside their own, with a flavor of European, Greek, and American culture represented in their pieces. This special exhibition is cosponsored by Loyola’s graduate program in liberal studies.
A native of South Carolina, Hyatt received his master’s in art education from Towson University and has taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) for 35 years. After his family moved to East Baltimore, he sold his first painting at age 11 and set up his first art studio while serving in the Army in the 1960s.
Treviño has had two solo exhibits since 2008 at C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore and another at Creative Alliance in Baltimore. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout the East Coast and his work has been featured in The Washington Post, Urbanite, Washington Blade, and other popular publications. In 2009 he won the Trawick prize and a Creative Baltimore Fund Individual Artist Grant, and was a finalist and a semi-finalist for the Janet and Walter Sondheim Prize. Treviño is an adjunct faculty member at both MICA and Towson University and holds the position of exhibitions coordinator at School 33 Art Center, and he has completed artist residencies at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Mass. and Creative Alliance. He has also been a visiting artist at American University, University of Maryland, MICA, and has served as a panel moderator for the College Art Association.
The Julio Fine Arts Gallery, located in the DeChiaro College Center on Loyola’s North Charles Street campus, is open from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and from 1 – 4 p.m. on Sundays.
