Loyola University Maryland has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can achieve for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the institution offers academic service-learning courses. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Loyola has been named to the Honor Roll.

“So many of Loyola’s students, faculty, staff, and administrators are deeply committed to contributing to and improving the communities of which they are a part, a principle in keeping with our identity as a Jesuit university,” said Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., Loyola’s president. “I am delighted to see this dedication to service and community engagement recognized on a national level.”

Loyola’s application for the Honor Roll cited such wide-ranging programs as the university’s partnership with the St. Ambrose Community Center in Baltimore’s Park Heights neighborhood; its extensive service-learning options; Spring Break Outreach, in which approximately 100 students each year spend their spring break engaged in domestic service immersion opportunities; the College Counseling Corps, a college access program which places graduate students in school counseling, education, and psychology in high-need urban high schools to help promising students navigate the college application process; and Literacy Scholars, a Loyola Clinical Centers program that offers literacy assessment and instruction services to students in grades 1 – 12.

The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact, and the American Council on Education.
