The Loyola University Maryland community is celebrating the life of Paul J. Coyne, Jr., Ph.D., professor of engineering science, who died on Jan. 23. He was 61.
Coyne joined Loyola as an assistant professor in 1976. From 1978-1982 he was the assistant director of the University's master's in engineering science program, and he held the role of director from 1983-2001. From 1984-1992, he was the founding chair of what was then known as the department of electrical engineering and engineering science. In addition to his work at Loyola, Coyne served as a consultant scientist at the Brimrose Corp. of Baltimore, a research associate at the Office of Naval Research, and a materials research engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Coyne retired with the rank of Captain from the Army Reserves in 1981.
"Paul was dedicated to Loyola, to engineering, and to our engineering students," said Robert Pond, Ph.D., associate dean of natural sciences and former chair of the engineering science department. "In the summers, he regularly mentored our Hauber research fellows, talented undergraduate students interested in performing independent research."
Coyne earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Delaware. He completed his Ph.D. in Applied Sciences-Metallurgy/Materials Sciences there in 1976.
He is the son of Teresa Coyne and the late Paul J. Coyne, Sr. He is survived by his mother and his wife, Rose; brother Robert; sister-in-law Holly; as well as two nieces.
