Loyola University Maryland faculty members Richard Blum, Ph.D., professor and Higgins Chair of Philosophy, and Maren Blohm, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, will join colleagues from Johns Hopkins University and the Washington Theological Union on Saturday, Nov. 14, for "Are We at Home in the Cosmos? Rethinking the Place of Humans in Creation," a faith and science symposium. The event, which will take place from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation at 4 East University Parkway in Baltimore, is funded by a $15,000 grant from the Metanexus Institute received by Greg Derry, Ph.D., professor of physics at Loyola. The Metanexus Institute is a global organization that promotes a transdisciplinary approach to profound questions of nature, culture, and the human person.
Blum, Blohm, and George Fisher, Ph.D., professor emeritus of earth and planetary science at Johns Hopkins University, will serve as respondents and discussion leaders following a keynote address by Sr. Ilia Delio, OSF, professor and chair of spirituality studies at the Washington Theological Union and an associate fellow at Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. She holds doctorates in both pharmacology and historical theology and is a member of the Commission for the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition.
The event, which is co-sponsored by the Greater Homewood Interfaith Alliance and the Baltimore Science/Religion Group, a local society of the Metanexus Institute, is part of an occasional series of programs organized by Loyola that bring individuals from various faith traditions together to discuss the relationship between religion and science. Loyola also matched Derry's original $15,000 grant to lend additional support to the initiative.
